Pilgrim’s Podcast for Preachers
Did you know that Pilgrim hosts a lectionary based weekly podcast for preachers?
By the Well is now in its fifth year of operation, providing cutting edge scholarship and pastoral insights for preachers all around Australia and beyond. Named in honour of the Samaritan woman who meets Jesus “by the well” and then witnesses to her whole town (see John 4), the podcast aims to have conversations about God’s life-giving Word and its transformational power.
The podcast commenced in 2019 as a collaboration between Fran Barber and Robyn Whitaker (pictured right with Sean Winter). Fran and Robyn, in their respective roles overseeing continuing education and New Testament lecturer, saw a need for resourcing preachers in local congregations – and thought a podcast to help equip preachers could be fun! The first few years of recording presented a range of challenges such as recording under the COVID-19 pandemic stay-at-home orders. However, the team have worked together to consistently deliver a valuable resource to the wider church.
Since those early days, the team has grown to include (with additional guests drawn in where possible):
- Sean Winter, Head of College, Pauline scholar, and Baptist minister
- Monica Melanchthon, Lutheran minister and Associate Professor of Hebrew Bible at Pilgrim
- Howard Wallace, Uniting Church minister and retired lecturer in Old Testament / Hebrew Bible
- Kylie Crabbe, Uniting Church minister and ACU researcher in New Testament and early Christian literature
- Sally Douglas, Uniting Church minister and lecturer in New Testament at Pilgrim
Pilgrim’s By the Well now has hundreds of listeners from around the world. Some congregations use it to facilitate Bible study! It remains one of the few preaching podcasts where women’s voices are amplified and where contemporary scholarship is put in conversation with pastoral theology and current world issues. We hope you might tune in.
You can find By the Well on all the usual podcast platforms (Apple, Listen Notes, Spotify, etc..) or at bythewell.com.au/. We also have a Facebook page for additional content and discussion.
